How we make development possible

Personnel and executive development at Deutsche Bahn

DB supports the in-house development of specialists and executives. As a result, around 90 per cent of specialist and executive positions are filled from within the company.

Deutsche Bahn systematically supports your career development. We support you with specially-designed programmes and offer attractive opportunities to further your career. DB's induction programmes lay the foundation for lifelong learning. As a junior staff member, you are given the skills you need to shape your career future on your own, but with our support.

Regular employee appraisals

We conduct regular appraisals with you to outline individual development possibilities and to agree on the specific steps needed to get there. Employee appraisals are conducted throughout the Group on the basis of agreed guidelines and standards. The aim and purpose of the appraisal is to give you feedback on your performance and to agree on training and qualifications needed for your current position.

Group-wide competence management

The Group-wide competence system, which includes fixed basic and social skills, a broad selection of technical, analytical and fixed managerial skills, provides the basis for the description of your job profile. Target competence profiles can be used by both the executive and employee to assess the employee’s current skill level. The final assessment enables you and the executive to determine what further training is required.

Transparent development paths

The development paths enable you as an employee to see clearly how you can progress further in the company and what must be done to achieve your target position. You will be shown what qualifications will increase your chances of pursuing a specific career. The development paths are an important succession planning tool for us – they provide you as an employee and the company with a clear picture of how employees can develop from specific occupational groups to fill key positions.

Management planning process

The annual management planning process (MPP) is relevant for you when you become an executive within the DB Group. It is used for the identification, selection, development and positioning of suitable executives. The job of the executives is to assess management potential based on the current basic, social and management skills. The management planning process is also used to identify the potential available in the company for more advanced management tasks and to open up prospects in the company for executives on the basis of a systematic career and succession planning system.
