Deutsche Bahn purchases Czech bus companies from Abellio
DB Arriva continues its expansion in Central Eastern European markets
Deutsche Bahn has acquired Dutch firm Abellio's bus operations in the Czech Republic. Having received approval from the national competition authority, the transaction has now been successfully completed. All parties involved have agreed not to disclose information regarding the price.
Abellio is a subsidiary of Dutch national rail company Nederlandse Spoorwegen. The two Abellio firms fully acquired by DB Arriva are PROBOBUS a.s. and Abellio CZ a.s. including PT Real, a company which is offering engineering services among other things. They employ approximately 200 people and operate over 110 buses in the Czech Republic. Their services are mainly concentrated in the region to the west of the capital, Prague(Praha). In 2012, the companies' combined revenue sums up to a total of CZK 257 million (approx. EUR 10.22 million on 31 December 2012).
With this purchase DB Arriva is expanding its activities in the Czech bus market. Arriva has been active in this market since 2006 and now operates bus services in a number of regions: Prague, Ostrava and Teplice. To a limited degree DB Arriva is also involved in rail services in northern Bohemia (Morava). With the conclusion of the deal, the number of people working for DB Arriva in the Czech Republic rises to some 3,100, and the company now owns a bus fleet that comprises more than 2,000 vehicles.
DB Arriva is a subsidiary of Deutsche Bahn. It provides regional transport services outside of Germany and is the largest international passenger transport operator in Central Eastern Europe. In May 2013, DB Arriva assumed control of Veolia Transdev's Central European business. In addition to its operations in the Czech Republic, DB Arriva is also active in the following countries in Central Eastern Europe: Croatia, Hungary, Poland, Serbia, Slovakia and Slovenia.
