The Deutsche Bahn fare system
The cheapest way to your destination – DB standard and saver fares
skip: The cheapest way to your destination – DB standard and saver faresThe option of boarding the next train, spontaneously and flexibly, is one of the major benefits of rail travel. Our inexpensive standard fares allow you to do so. BahnCard holders are always entitled to the discounts granted on BahnCard 25 or 50.
Anyone who wants to save even more money and is able to plan in advance pays a much lower price for the ticket with our Sparpreis 25 or 50 saver fares. These are valid only on the selected trains for outward and return journeys, and must be booked at least three days before departure (minimum fare regulation, limited capacities only).
Families travelling with children aged 14 or under can reserve up to five seats for just EUR 8.00 (2nd class) / EUR 10 (1st class) per direction. If you book at www.bahn.de the reservation costs just EUR 4.00 (2nd class) / EUR 6 (1st class). You will automatically receive a family reservation if you book for more than two persons and state that one of the passengers is a child. When buying a ticket or booking on the Internet, please state any children (aged 6 to 14) who are to travel free on that ticket. It is not possible to add children to the ticket afterwards, once you are on the train.
You can also save on the fare if you are not travelling alone. Up to four further persons can travel for half price and even combine this discount with saver fares. Deutsche Bahn even runs a special contact centre where you can find potential fellow travellers so you can save money right from your next journey (minimum fare regulation, no sales on board the train).
If you are travelling in a group of six or more, the "Gruppe&Spar" fares are usually the best choice. The earlier you book, the cheaper you can travel. On long-distance routes, you can save as much as 70 per cent of the standard fare. The fare for a Gruppe&Spar-70 ticket is never more than EUR 36.60 per person, no matter how far you travel inside Germany. The only condition is that you have to decide on a certain train on a certain date when buying your ticket.
Please note that there are only limited numbers of Gruppe&Spar tickets available for long-distance connections.
People who travel to work by rail or who travel regularly on our network deserve a reward. We therefore offer special rates for frequent travellers and commuters, which enable them to make substantial savings. With a fixed-route season ticket, for example, you can save up to 70 – in some cases even 85 – per cent of the standard fare. These tickets are valid for any number of journeys on the route of your choice. Fixed-route season tickets are available as a yearly, monthly or weekly pass. They can be issued for one person only, or as a transferable ticket. Deutsche Bahn has even devised a special product for environment-conscious employers: the JobTicket subscription. If the employer contributes to the cost of the employee's yearly pass, the fare can be reduced by a further 18 per cent. What's more, up to four persons can usually accompany you free of charge at weekends and on public holidays on most yearly and monthly passes.
Those who wish to save money at the weekends but do not have a yearly pass can opt for the DB "Schönes-Wochenende-Ticket": five passengers can travel 2nd class on all Deutsche Bahn local trains and on the trains of many transport associations all day long on a Saturday or Sunday for just EUR 35 (only if you buy the ticket from a machine or on the Internet – otherwise EUR 37).
If you buy your Schönes-Wochenende-Ticket on board the train, you will be charged the on-board fare of EUR 35 + 10% (EUR 35 + EUR 3.50 = EUR 38.50). Please note that it is not possible to buy a Schönes-Wochenende-Ticket on board trains which are run by transport associations. Please note the special conditions which apply in each case before boarding the train.
And if you still haven't saved enough, you can also travel by night. With a "SparNight" fare, you can travel in comfort through Germany, to Austria, Italy, Denmark or Switzerland for just EUR 29 in a seated coach. Fares for couchette berths start at just EUR 49, and even the comfortable sleeping-car costs as little as EUR 69. Guaranteed to get you to your destination relaxed and rested, after a quiet night.
