Vehicles in the DB Museum in Nuremberg

A large collection of railway legends is on display in two vehicle halls.

The DB Museum has the largest collection of heritage railway vehicles in Germany. There are around 30 superb examples from the collection on display in Nuremberg.

Vehicle hall with ICE and Adler

This is where you’ll find the highlights from all the eras of German railway history. From a replica of the first locomotive ever to run in Germany – the “Adler” – to the saloon coach of the Bavarian “Swan King” Ludwig II and the great names in the history of steam locomotion. The historical collection is rounded off with a 1:1 model of the ICE 3, one of the most modern trains operated by Deutsche Bahn AG.

Vehicles in two halls

The vehicles are on display in two separate vehicle halls. Vehicle Hall I, on the ground floor of the main building of the DB Museum, houses legends of the 19th century, while Vehicle Hall II, which is located on the outdoor area of the DB Museum, directly opposite the main building, presents railway stars from the 20th century.

Specials

In addition to original vehicles, there are numerous extras in the vehicle halls guaranteed to delight our visitors.

The oldest steam locomotive preserved in Germany, the “Nordgau”, is on display in Vehicle Hall I with an interactive demonstration. This is the place to get an answer to one of the most frequently asked questions on railways – “How does a steam locomotive work?”

A few steps further at the “Royal platform”, besides the saloon coaches of the Bavarian King Ludwig II and Chancellor of the German Empire, Otto von Bismarck, our visitors can listen in on a conversation between the two historical figures.

Visitors can also climb into the driver’s cab of the Bavarian S 2/6 steam locomotive in Vehicle Hall I.

There is another special treat in Vehicle Hall II – the drive system of the Prussian steam locomotive T 18 from 1924 can be set in motion.

Other vehicles from the collection

Only a part of the vehicle collection of the DB Museum is actually on display in Nuremberg. We have a total of over 160 historical railway vehicles in our possession. This is the largest collection of its kind in Germany. Other original vehicles can be viewed in the museum locations in Koblenz and Halle/Saale.

Further information

From April to October, you can access the outdoor area of the DB Museum from Vehicle Hall II.
