1899
- Opening of the “Royal Bavarian Railway Museum” in Nuremberg
1902
- Addition of a department on postal services (today’s “Museum for Communications”)
- Renamed the “Museum of Transport”
1925
- Opening of the new museum building in Lessingstraße
- The railway department is assigned to the newly founded Deutsche Reichsbahn.

1935
- Redesign of the museum to celebrate the 100th anniversary of German railways and inclusion in Nazi propaganda
- Completion of a replica of the “Adler” (Eagle), the first steam locomotive operated in Germany
1939
- Closure of the museum following the start of the war
- Parts of the museum building are severely damaged during air raids from 1943 to 1945, in particular the roof and inner courtyard
1953
- Partial re-opening of the Museum of Transport that had been damaged during World War II
- The railway department is assigned to the new Bundesbahn Directorate in Nuremberg
1960
- Re-opening of most of the museum to celebrate the 125th anniversary of German railways
- Opening of the large model railway on the first floor and creation of the “Adlersaal” (Eagle Room) in the former “inner courtyard”
1984/85
- Opening of a new permanent exhibition entitled “Eras of Railway History” and the vehicle hall in Sandstraße opposite the main building to celebrate the 150th anniversary of German railways
1996
- The railway department of the Museum of Transport becomes the corporate museum of Deutsche Bahn AG.
- Introduction of the “DB Museum” designation
1997
- Opening of the “Railway World of Discovery”
1999
- 100th anniversary celebration of the museum with an exhibition entitled “Travelling in Germany in 1899” and a large display of vehicles on the premises of the former Forwarding Office South in Nuremberg
2001
- Opening of a subsidiary museum of the DB Museum in Koblenz-Lützel
2003
- Opening of a subsidiary museum of the DB Museum in Halle/Saale
2005
- Completion of a historical tour entitled “History of the Railway in Germany”
- Large fire at Gostenhof Depot, destroying 24 vehicles, including the “Adler”. The Board of Management of DB AG takes the decision to rebuild the “Adler”
2007
- Return of the rebuilt “Adler” locomotive to the DB Museum in Nuremberg
- Re-opening of the “Railway World of Discovery”
