Article: GDL strike disrupts supply chains: 190 freight trains out of action

Nationwide repercussions for DB Cargo • DB Cargo is working with rail transport companies throughout Germany and Europe to safeguard deliveries

Strike action by the German Train Drivers' Union (GDL) could have a serious impact on Deutsche Bahn's rail freight operations and on supply chains across Germany and Europe. At the moment, the company's systems contain a backlog of some 190 freight trains.

DB fears that the strike will cause lasting damage to climate-friendly rail freight operations because customers could switch their transport activities back to road haulage as a result of the stoppages.

So far, DB Cargo has been able to move the supply-relevant trains following a great deal of coordination. These services are economically important because they supply power stations and major industrial sites. DB Cargo is also working with rail transport companies throughout Germany and Europe to ensure that trains keep moving. At the moment, the strike is affecting all of its operations in Germany.

When the strike ends, the company will work at full speed to tackle the train backlog.

In a move designed to minimise the event's impact, DB Cargo promptly contacted all customers to provide them with information about the situation.
