This is green.

A strong rail system is absolutely essential if we are to meet our climate targets in Germany and Europe. That's what This is green. represents – it stands for our environmental strategy and more than 150 measures.

Nobody can still be in doubt about climate change. We – Deutsche Bahn employees and passengers alike – can all see it with our own eyes. Hotter summers, stronger storms and unprecedented downpours have gone from being exceptional events to an almost daily occurrence. We all have a responsibility to do something now so that we can leave the coming generations a world they can be proud to call home.

Deutsche Bahn is rising to the challenge and knows how important its role is for the environment and society. We are strengthening Germany's rail system – for the climate, for people, for the economy, and for Europe.

Our Strong Rail strategy lays the foundations for our objectives. Trains are the greenest form of transportation, so promoting a massive shift in traffic from road to rail is literally the only way that Germany and Europe as a whole can meet climate targets.

Germany needs green #strongrail. No other mode of transport is as eco-friendly as rail. As an international provider of mobility and logistics services, we are the key player in the shift to new forms of mobility. That's why we are focusing all our efforts on upgrading and expanding, to make Deutsche Bahn more robust, more powerful and more pioneering.

We will be more robust by expanding our capacity and making it greener. We will be more powerful by rethinking our mobility offerings and creating green options. We will be more pioneering by delivering green mobility and providing services people can use. This way, we will make the mobility transition real.

More than 150 Environmental measures

A strong rail system is absolutely essential if we are to meet our climate targets in Germany. That's another thing that This is green. represents – it stands for our environmental strategy and more than 150 measures that we've initiated to protect the climate, nature and resources and to reduce noise.

Our climate protection goal is to be completely CO2-free by 2050. But we will have slashed CO2 emissions by over 50 percent much earlier than that – by 2030. We are also working to switch our traction current exclusively to electricity from renewable sources, and aim to achieve this by 2038.

CO2-neutral by 2050

Environmental protection for us also means safeguarding our ecosystems. This is why we make careful use of resources. Our target for 2020 is to recycle more than 95 percent of the raw materials we use in our processes.

95 percent Recycling levels by the end of 2020

At DB, however, protecting ecosystems means going one step further: We actively create habitats for endangered plants and animals, and we encourage biodiversity.

Transporting more passengers and freight in a green rail system has other implications. We have to think about the people who live beside our rail tracks. For their sake, we are constantly working to make our trains quieter, and we are also further investing in noise control and developing innovative measures that reduce the levels of noise generated by the rail system. Our objective is absolutely clear: We want to reduce rail noise by 50 percent by the end of 2020.

For us, being green is not just some kind of act. It is a mindset that shapes all of our actions. Every day, our employees use innovative and digital solutions to help make Deutsche Bahn steadily more eco-friendly as a company. At the same time, we are establishing green services that cater to the needs of our passengers and business customers in every sector.

This way, Deutsche Bahn can deliver on its promise to make the mobility transition a success, both in Germany and throughout Europe. And, at the same time, it means that our customers can become environmental protectors.
