Article: Project for the month of november - No. 109 Squirrels at DB.

Each month we'll be introducing you our project of the month. This month`s project: no. 109 - Squirrels at DB.

Squirrels are amongst the most well-known native rodents and are a protected species. At the beginning of the cold season the small gnawers abandon their shyness and fill their pantries for the winter. Deutsche Bahn supports the squirrels in their search for food. In the "Project of the month" you can find out about this and many other measures undertaken by DB to promote species conservation.

Squirrels at DB.

In Germany, special importance is attached to the protection of squirrels. As so-called cultural successors, the wild animals often live near humans and can be seen especially in cities, parks and gardens. However, these areas often provide only a scarce food supply for them.

To not only support squirrels in their foraging but to inspire students for environmental issues as well, the DB raffled 50 feeding boxes among primary schools and kindergartens.

Thus, feeding boxes on the school grounds increase the food range helping the animals to survive the winter . Moreover, students can observe the small rodents and learn more about them.

Support for squirrels is given by DB employees thereupon. Our eco-aware trainees at DB Long Distance have installed feeding stations for the animals. DB employees take on sponsorships of these foodbanks. We are currently motivating other employees to install food stations for squirrels at suitable locations. In addition, trainees from DB vehicle maintenance in Nuremberg built small cottages for the rodents on their factory ground.
