Deutsche Bahn AG has committed to reducing its greenhouse gas emissions across the entire value chain to net zero by 2040. This goal is supported by an implementation plan and has been validated by the renowned and independent Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). One important lever is phasing out diesel. However, diesel locomotives are still used for shunting operations and on lines that are not fully electrified. For these cases, DB is working on solutions to reduce fuel consumption.
Together with its partners, DB Cargo is implementing what is known as “ECO-Tuning” on its shunting locomotives. This involves adjusting the engine control system to reduce fuel consumption. The tuning takes only 15 minutes and can be installed via a software update without requiring an additional visit to the repair shop. Many of DB’s shunting locomotives in Germany and Europe are already in service with ECO-Tuning.
