Deutsche Bahn AG relies on so-called low-VOC cleaning agents to clean train brakes and uses refillable pump bottles. VOCs (volatile organic compounds) are volatile organic compounds that are released into the air when used and can contribute to air pollution. These include, for example, hydrocarbons and alcohols.
The low-VOC cleaners are used, for instance, at the long-distance train maintenance depot in Berlin-Rummelsburg. They contain fewer volatile organic compounds than the cleaning products originally used. This saves approximately three metric tons of solvents and around 2,500 single-use spray cans per year in Berlin alone.
