Deutsche Bahn train drivers learn in special training courses how to get trains to their destination as energy-efficiently as possible. They are supported by driver assistance systems. These systems show, for example, based on the route topography and timetable, where traction can be switched off early and the train can coast. This works particularly well on gradients. If traction is switched off before the summit, the train can coast over long distances. Such assistance systems are already in use in long-distance and freight transport. Electric trains in regional transport are also equipped with energy meters. The technology is now also being installed in diesel trains in regional transport.
Telematics systems in use at DB Regio
DB Regio has equipped the majority of its diesel fleet with telematics systems. A special software system, the Regio Energy Saving System RESY, shows train drivers recommendations for energy-efficient driving on a display. This enables them to operate energy-efficiently even on unfamiliar routes.
LEADER supports DB Cargo train drivers
At DB Cargo, train drivers receive driving recommendations for the most energy-saving speed possible via an additional display. The recommendations are determined based on train data, the timetable and the route’s elevation profile. In addition, employees regularly receive personal overviews of the energy consumption values of their journeys.
Following the implementation of LEADER 3.0 in Germany, the system is now also being assessed for use in other European countries. LEADER is already installed on around two thirds of DB Cargo’s electric locomotives as of the end of 2025. In addition, diesel mainline locomotives have also been gradually equipped with the driver assistance system.
