Deutsche Bahn trains operate daily on both local and long distance rail transport routes and are exposed to a variety of weather and environmental conditions. To ensure clear visibility for passengers and train drivers, the trains are therefore regularly cleaned in washing facilities.
In most of these facilities, the wash water is recirculated. In some facilities, this allows for the reuse of approximately 60 percent of the water used. In Berlin-Grünau, a new washing facility was put into operation for the new S-Bahn Berlin trains, allowing up to 90 percent of the wash water to be reused.
In many locations, the wash water is also biologically treated using bacteria. Where possible, Deutsche Bahn AG also uses well water or rainwater.
